GESAMTKUNSTWERK! theatre
(don’t worry, we just mumble through it too…)
... to create total, unified works. To immerse; to create theatre as experience. To grasp by the throat and shake with yellowed fingers; to draw blood; to stroke your hair. To encourage sitting on the ceiling and waltzing down the walls. To suppose fearlessness, to laugh with every atom of the body. To Connect. To stutter through poetry, sob through knock-knock jokes, and sit in delirious silence. To hum really obnoxiously.
How to pronounce GESAMTKUNSTWERK! - “geh-zamt-koonst-verk”. But if you just shout ‘G’ or even “hey” really loudly, we’re likely to turn around.
Vision:
We believe in the power of thought as a power of change.
We believe in the value of opening minds, of holding hands, of reaching for fingers in the dark; in the might of human narrative and the illumination of human struggle; in the necessary relevance of current issues and the elucidation that comes from sieving through them in a shared space.
We believe in joy, and in the classical notion of catharsis.
We believe that technology is just another tool for storytelling. And it's a good one.
We believe that nothing is too large to take on with a clear head and a full breath.
We believe that it is better to know your neighbor, to know yourself, and to know the world around you.
We believe that even the air in a space should set fire to your imagination.
We believe that you go to the theatre to be moved, to be swept up, to be entranced and surprised. That you should witness great beauty, and epic filth, and come away richer than when you entered.
We believe in challenging complacency, expanding audience demographics, and in practicing responsible and racially conscious casting.
We believe in the value of the playwright and the worth of exploring new works, ignored works, and works from other countries and cultures. If you haven't heard of it, we're interested.
Most of all, we believe that a play is just that: play.
